P0015 on a 2014-2016 Mazda3 means the PCM sees the exhaust camshaft timing sitting too far retarded while it is commanding advance. Debris that drops oil pressure is the pattern Mazda documents, so check for related codes (P0524 especially) and the oil first. Confirm by comparing actual and desired exhaust timing on a scan tool. The PCM takes no fail-safe action, so the car may drive normally.

Safety first

  • Let a hot engine cool first; burns are severe.
  • If the oil pressure warning light comes on, stop the engine; do not keep driving.
  • Never take the hydraulic actuator apart; it is a precision unit.
  • With the chain off, lower the piston from top dead center before turning the camshaft, or a valve can hit it.
  • Keep the chain pulled up so it cannot jump off the crank sprocket, and check the valve timing afterward.

What does P0015 mean on a 2014-2016 Mazda3?

P0015 (hydraulic variable valve timing control system: over-retarded) refers to the exhaust camshaft, which has a hydraulic actuator run by an oil control valve (OCV). The intake side uses an electric actuator with its own codes. The PCM runs it continuously from the crank and exhaust cam sensors.

With the exhaust cam commanded to maximum advance, the PCM compares actual timing to target. A gap of 20 degrees or less is normal. P0015 sets when the cam stays retarded past that gap for about 5 seconds. All of these must hold:

  • Battery voltage above 11 V
  • Engine speed 5,000 rpm or less
  • Coolant temperature 60 C (140 F) or more
  • Timing control in its maximum cam advanced mode
  • P0335 and P0365 not detected

It is a two drive cycle code: a first-cycle fault is stored as pending, and a repeat in the second cycle stores the DTC and turns the light on. If the same fault is already stored, the light comes on in the first cycle. The light goes out after three normal drive cycles in a row; the code stays stored for 41 warm-up cycles or until cleared.

These codes share the system:

  • P0014 (over-advanced): same check and preconditions, but the control must be in feedback mode; 5 seconds; two drive cycles.
  • P0017 (exhaust crank to cam correlation): light after two consecutive drive cycles, or one if already stored.
  • P0335 (crankshaft sensor circuit) and P0365 (exhaust cam sensor circuit): first-cycle light, and the PCM stops fuel and ignition. P0335 sets with no crank signal while the exhaust cam turns 5 times, or a wrong pattern over 10 crank rotations; P0365 with a wrong pattern over 24 crank rotations, or cylinder identification not done within 15.
  • P2090 and P2091 (OCV circuit low and high input): control voltage too low or too high; first-cycle light; the PCM sets exhaust timing to maximum advance.
  • P0524 (oil pressure too low): switch on for 5 continuous seconds above 650 rpm with coolant at 30 C (86 F) or less, above 1,500 rpm at 68 C (154 F) or less, or above 2,500 rpm at 68 C (154 F) or more; oil warning light after 1 second, not the check engine light.

What symptoms does P0015 cause on the Mazda3?

Any of these can show up:

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough or uneven idle
  • Hesitation or weaker acceleration
  • Lower fuel economy
  • Harder starting
  • Rattling from the top of the engine at startup, pointing to a loose timing chain

Mazda Technical Service Bulletin 01-016/19 covers rough idle with the check engine light on and P0015 and/or P0524, the pattern in cause number 1.

How do you diagnose P0015 on a 2014-2016 Mazda3?

You will need a scan tool with live data and force-drive, hand tools, and a way to measure oil line pressure.

  1. 1

Pull stored and pending codes and record freeze frame data before clearing anything.

If P0335, P0365, P2090, P2091 or P0524 is present, work that code first. Check for related Mazda repair information too. A rough idle with the check engine light on and P0015 and/or P0524 stored puts you on the bulletin path below.

  2. 2

Compare actual and desired exhaust cam timing (live data VT_EX_ACT and VT_EX_DES).

Idle, raise speed to 3,000 rpm or less, return to idle, five times in a row, watching whether actual follows desired.

    • If actual does not follow, ignition off, remove the OCV with its connector attached, and force-drive it with the scan tool. If you cannot confirm the spool valve moving, replace the OCV and confirm the repair. If it moves, continue to the hardware list.
    • If actual follows, start the engine, watch the actual value, and shake the OCV and PCM connectors. If it fluctuates, repair or replace the wiring or connector and confirm the repair. If not, pick up the hardware list at the exhaust cam sensor item.
  3. 3

Work the hardware and oil list in order:

    • Actuator: check that the rotor notch and cover projection line up (turn the engine two turns if not) and listen for a slap before each cam lift (a loose actuator). If it fails, replace it.
    • Timing chain: check exhaust valve timing, looseness and jumping. If wrong, repair or replace the faulty part and reassemble at the correct timing.
    • Exhaust cam sensor detection area: remove foreign matter such as metallic dust.
    • Oil: if the specified oil is not in the engine, replace it with genuine oil; if the level is low, add genuine oil. Then run the oil pressure check. A problem sends you to the leak and restriction check; none sends you straight to confirming the repair. Leakage or a restriction means repairing or replacing the faulty part and adding genuine oil; none means confirming the repair.
  4. 4

Use the bulletin path for a rough idle with the check engine light on and P0015 and/or P0524 stored.

Mazda traces it to a foreign object on the oil pump pressure relief valve or the OCV, dropping oil pressure. The light can come on during that brief event, with the rough idle showing up later. Confirm the concern, clear the DTC, raise engine speed to 4,000 rpm or more ten times, then measure main oil line pressure with the engine warm and electrical loads off, reading rpm from the scan tool.

    • If only P0015 is stored and pressure is abnormal, replace the oil pump and modified strainer. The filter and pan stay.
    • If only P0015 is stored and pressure is normal, compare desired and actual timing at 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. Within 5 degrees, replace the strainer; over 5 degrees, replace the OCV too. The pump, filter and pan stay.
    • If P0015 and P0524 are stored, or P0524 alone, replace the pump and strainer when pressure is abnormal, and only the strainer when pressure is normal.
    • On the 2.0L built in Mexico (VIN beginning 3MZ), the strainer may already be the modified type; where the parts list shows no new part number, skip it.

Every branch ends with cleaning the oil pan bottom and changing the oil, and where pressure was abnormal you erase the codes too. The bulletin path fits verified complaints like that; the checks above cover the rest. The checks above change the oil only for the wrong type or a low level, but the bulletin changes it in every branch.

What if the obvious fix does not work?

If the code comes back, recheck the oil first, then repeat the inspection from the actuator check. A sticky or clogged OCV, dirty or wrong-thickness oil, clogged passages starving the actuator, a stretched chain, or a wiring or connector fault can all bring it back. Common mistakes are replacing parts before a test points to them, skipping the connector check, and neglecting oil changes.

If P0015 is still pending after the repair and confirmation drive, repeat the inspection from the actuator check. If it still returns, replace the PCM.

How do you confirm the repair?

All of these are required:

  • Reconnect every connector you disconnected.
  • Clear the code, run the confirmation drive below, and check for a pending P0015. If one shows, repeat the inspection from the actuator check.
  • Work any other stored or pending code you find.
  • After an oil change, perform the engine oil data reset.
  • After servicing the chain or actuators, check the valve timing. After actuator work, also check ignition timing, idle speed and idle mixture.

For the confirmation drive, warm the engine to 80 C (176 F) or more, shift to 2nd and accelerate rapidly to 50 km/h (31 mph), decelerate to idle, repeat once, then check for a pending code.

Fix these codes first if present: P0335 (crank sensor), P0365 (exhaust cam sensor), P2090 and P2091 (OCV circuit), P0524 (oil pressure).

Questions mechanics ask about P0015 on the Mazda3

What does P0015 mean on a 2014-2016 Mazda3?+

The PCM sees the exhaust camshaft timing sitting retarded against its target for about 5 seconds while it is commanding advance. It applies to both the 2.0L and the 2.5L Skyactiv-G engines.

Can you drive a Mazda3 with P0015 set?+

The PCM takes no fail-safe action, so the car may feel normal at first. Mazda ties the code to a drop in oil pressure from debris, and the rough idle can appear after the light comes on.

Will P0015 clear itself on the Mazda3?+

The check engine light goes off after three drive cycles in a row with the engine control system normal. The code stays stored until 41 warm-up cycles of normal operation or until you clear it with a scan tool.

What else sets with P0015 on a Mazda3?+

Mazda pairs P0015 with P0524 (engine oil pressure too low). If P0335, P0365, P2090, P2091 or P0524 is present, work those codes before you judge P0015.

Does Mazda have a bulletin for P0015 on the Mazda3?+

Yes. Mazda Technical Service Bulletin 01-016/19 covers rough idle with the check engine light on and P0015 and/or P0524 on Mazda3 models that include the 2014-2016 cars with the 2.0L and 2.5L engines. It points to debris lowering oil pressure and gives an oil pressure first path that ends in an oil pump and strainer, or strainer and OCV, plus an oil change.

Is the OCV the first part to replace for P0015 on the Mazda3?+

Not by itself. In the checks above you replace the OCV only if you cannot see it move when you force-drive it with the scan tool. On the bulletin path the OCV is added only when oil pressure is normal and actual exhaust timing differs from desired by more than 5 degrees.
