P0217 on a 2017-2019 Ford Escape EcoBoost: Overheated? Check for Coolant in the Cylinders

P0217 on a 2017-2019 Ford Escape with the 1.5L or 2.0L EcoBoost means the PCM sensed the engine overheating. Coolant getting into the cylinders is the most likely cause, then plain coolant loss. Start with a cold coolant level check at the degas bottle and a cooling system pressure test. Drive only far enough to stop safely; push on with the gauge in the red and the PCM cuts cylinders and can shut the engine off.
Safety first
- Let the engine cool; never open the pressure relief cap hot or running, and turn it slowly a half turn to release pressure.
- On the 2.0L, cover the generator with waterproof plastic before disconnecting thermostat housing hoses.
What does P0217 mean on a 2017-2019 Escape?
P0217 (Engine Coolant Overtemperature Condition) means the PCM has judged the engine is overheating. On the 1.5L EcoBoost it senses the overheat through the ECT sensor; on the 2.0L EcoBoost, through the CHT sensor.
It sets when coolant flow or heat transfer has been lost (low coolant, poor flow, or poor heat rejection at the radiator).
Fail-safe cooling then takes over. Closed loop uses the CHT sensor and takes priority, because it keeps tracking engine temperature after coolant is lost and the ECT sensor cannot.
- At stage 1, the gauge moves to red; if temperature keeps rising, the Powertrain Check Lamp (wrench) comes on and P1285 sets.
- At stage 2, the PCM cuts 2 alternating cylinders (they pull in air to cool), limits load, holds speed below 3,000 rpm, then ramps it down to as low as 800 rpm; the MIL comes on and P1299 sets. At high throttle, deactivation waits 10 seconds, and the engine stays on 2 cylinders until the ignition is cycled.
- At stage 3, the lamp flashes and the engine shuts off after 30 seconds.
Open loop uses the ECT sensor when its reading climbs abnormally fast or all fail-safe sensors have failed. Speed is held below 3,000 rpm, then ramped to as low as 800 rpm, and P1285 sets. Keep driving and the engine is disabled and P1299 sets; it restarts capped at 800 rpm until P1299 is cleared with a scan tool. The MIL also needs a scan tool clear once the fault is fixed.
The related codes are P1285 (Cylinder Head Overtemperature Condition) and P1299 (Cylinder Head Overtemperature Protection Active), plus P0125 and P0128 for the opposite, an engine not warming up.
What symptoms does P0217 cause on the Escape?
- Temperature gauge in the red zone
- Powertrain Check Lamp (wrench) on, then the MIL
- Reduced power, with engine speed held down
- Engine running on two cylinders
- Engine shutting off after the lamp flashes
- Coolant level that keeps dropping with no puddle under the vehicle
- White exhaust smoke
- Rough running, with misfire codes stored alongside P0217
What causes P0217 on the Escape, most likely first?
Internal coolant leak ranks first, because Ford's bulletins tie it to P0217 on both engines.
| Rank | Cause | Quick confirm | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Coolant entering the cylinders (block or head gasket) | Long pressure hold drops, combustion gases in the coolant, coolant seen with a borescope | Short block on the 1.5L; long block on the 2.0L |
| 2 | Low coolant from an external leak or failed cap | Cold level check, cap test, system pressure test | Repair the leak or replace the cap; refill and bleed |
| 3 | 1.5L charge air cooler leaking coolant | Pinch off the cooler's coolant hoses and retest; inspect the cooler once removed | Replace the cooler, plus the intake manifold if bolt damaged |
| 4 | Blocked airflow, missing deflectors, grille shutter fault or fan not running | Front end check, grille shutter codes, fan running at MAX A/C | Clear the blockage, refit deflectors, repair the shutter or fan |
| 5 | Coolant pump not moving coolant | Heater outlet hose not hot after 30 minutes at MAX HEAT | Replace the coolant pump |
| 6 | Thermostat stuck or damaged | Inspect the removed thermostat | Replace the thermostat housing assembly |
| 7 | Restricted radiator | Still overheating after the thermostat housing is replaced | Replace the radiator |
For cause 1, TSB 20-2100 (1.5L) and TSB 19-2346 (2.0L) cover coolant in the cylinders, and Customer Satisfaction Program 21N12 offered a one-time 1.5L short block after the 19B37 PCM reprogram; TSB 16-0150 covers cause 3 on the 2017 1.5L, and safety recall 26S01 covers a leaking 2.0L block heater.
How do you diagnose P0217 on a 2017-2019 Escape?
You will need a scan tool with PCM self-test, a pressure tester with a degas bottle adapter, a combustion leak tester, a refractometer, a vacuum filler, a borescope, hose clamp pliers and a drain pan.
- 1
Start cold and look.
Check the degas bottle level (there is no radiator cap), confirm the pressure relief cap is fitted correctly, and record cooling codes. Look for leaks, a worn or loose belt, restricted airflow, white or gray smoke, and oil, coolant or transmission fluid where it should not be. Wrong coolant, stop leak debris, rust or oil mean a flush and refill with Motorcraft Orange and distilled water. Fix anything obvious and retest.
- 2
Confirm the code and clear the way.
Run PCM self-test. No P0217, P1285 or P1299 means real overheating is not verified; check the gauge itself, and chase any other PCM codes through engine controls diagnosis. Repair active grille shutter codes first. Clear leaves or cardboard from the radiator and condenser; confirm every air deflector is fitted. With the engine running at MAX A/C and the blower on HI, the cooling fan should run; if not, diagnose the fan.
- 3
Test the cap, then the system.
Replace the cap if it fails its test, and keep going if overheating continues. Then pressure test the system. If it holds, skip to the combustion gas check. If it drops, fix the external leak; with none, move to internal checks.
- 4
Hunt for internal leaks.
Oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil means engine diagnosis. On the 6F35, transmission fluid in the coolant or coolant in the fluid means a new transmission fluid warmer, transmission repair as needed, then a system test. On the 1.5L, inspect the charge air cooler and replace it if it leaks. On a 2017 1.5L with low coolant or the listed codes that loses pressure, Ford's bulletin has you pinch off the cooler's coolant hoses and retest; if it then holds, pull the cooler and check it for intake manifold bolt damage: damage means a new manifold and cooler, no damage the cooler only.
- 5
Combustion gas, pump and thermostat.
Combustion gases in the coolant mean an internal engine leak; pressure test to find the path. If none, run 30 minutes at MAX HEAT and feel the heater outlet hose; not hot means a new coolant pump. Then inspect the thermostat and fit a new thermostat housing either way, since they are one assembly. Still overheating, replace the radiator.
- 6
Use Ford's coolant-intrusion path only when the vehicle fits: a 1.5L built on or before 08-Apr-2019 or a 2.0L built on or before 16-May-2019, with low coolant, white smoke or rough running, and only P0300, P0301-P0304, P0316, P0217, P1285 or P1299 stored. The long hold catches a slow leak.
- On the 1.5L bulletin path, hold pressure 5 hours at operating temperature. Only if it drops past the bulletin's limit, pull the plugs and look for coolant; only if found, replace the short block and head gasket (on AWD the power transfer unit comes out; replace the flexplate only if the dowel pins are missing or damaged).
- On the 1.5L program path, the PCM reprogram comes first, done with a scan tool. Then, with the listed codes present, hold pressure 2 hours at operating temperature and check for combustion gases; gases mean a short block. A drop past the limit means plugs out and a borescope: coolant, short block; none, refit the plugs and the program does not apply.
- On the 2.0L bulletin path, hold pressure 5 hours at operating temperature and check for combustion gases. Only if it drops past the limit, borescope the cylinders; only if coolant is found, replace the long block. If not, return to normal diagnosis.

What if the obvious fix does not work?
Coolant vanishing with no puddle, plus white smoke, points inside the engine; I go straight to the long hold and combustion gas check.
A head gasket alone is the wrong fix when coolant is getting into the cylinders on these engines; Ford's bulletins replace the engine block assembly. On a 2017 1.5L, check the charge air cooler before you condemn the engine.
If you find coolant in a cylinder, stop there: the next step is the short block on the 1.5L or the long block on the 2.0L. If it still overheats after a new thermostat housing, replace the radiator.
How do you confirm the repair?
Refilling and bleeding is required after any repair that opens the system. Vacuum fill with the specified coolant, then:
- Fill the degas bottle to MAX FILL, fit the cap to its hard stop, and turn climate control off.
- Start, hold 3,500 rpm for 30 seconds, shut off and wait 1 minute. Top up when cool enough to open the cap (MAX FILL warm, MIN FILL cold).
- Idle until the thermostat is fully open, shown by the cooling fan cycling on at least once.
- Repeat 3,500 rpm for 30 seconds, idle 30 seconds, off 1 minute: 5 times on the 1.5L, 10 times on the 2.0L.
- Top up to MAX FILL and fit the cap to the hard stop.
Clear the codes with a scan tool (P1299 keeps the engine speed-limited until cleared), test the system for normal operation and rerun PCM self-test. After the 1.5L PCM reprogram, shifts may feel firmer for several days while the transmission relearns.
Questions mechanics ask about P0217 on the Escape
Can I keep driving an Escape with P0217?+–
Not far. If the overheat continues, the PCM cuts two cylinders, holds engine speed down to as low as 800 rpm, and shuts the engine off 30 seconds after the Powertrain Check Lamp starts flashing. Driving on after the gauge climbs can turn a coolant problem into serious engine damage on these EcoBoost engines.
Will P0217 clear itself on a Ford Escape?+–
No. On the 2017-2019 Escape, the MIL only goes out when the fault is fixed and the code is cleared with a scan tool. If P1299 is stored, the engine also stays speed-limited until you clear it, even after a restart.
Why is my Escape running on two cylinders?+–
That is stage 2 of fail-safe cooling. The PCM shuts off two cylinders and alternates them so they draw in air and cool, while it limits load and engine speed. The engine stays on two cylinders until the ignition is cycled off and on.
What other codes set with P0217 on the Escape?+–
P1285 and P1299 come from the fail-safe cooling stages. When coolant is getting into the cylinders on the 1.5L or 2.0L, Ford's bulletins list misfire codes P0300, P0301-P0304 and P0316 alongside it. Misfires plus P0217 plus a dropping coolant level point you at the internal leak first.
Does Ford's program cover P0217 on the 1.5L Escape?+–
Customer Satisfaction Program 21N12 offered a one-time short block replacement on the 1.5L for coolant entering the cylinders, for 7 years or 84,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever came first, and the coverage passed to later owners. The 19B37 PCM reprogram had to be completed first. On the 2.0L, TSB 19-2346 lists the long block repair as eligible under the Ford warranty coverage that applies to the causal part.
Is P0217 on the Escape always a head gasket?+–
No. The overheat path checks coolant level, airflow, the fan, the cap, leaks, the coolant pump, the thermostat and the radiator first. When coolant does show up in a cylinder on the 1.5L, TSB 20-2100 calls for a short block and head gasket, not a gasket alone.
Is there a recall that affects the 2.0L Escape cooling system?+–
Yes. Ford safety recall 26S01 covers the block heater on 2013-2019 Escape 2.0L models; it can crack and leak coolant, and can short when plugged in. Owners are told not to plug it in until it is repaired. The remedy is a new block heater, or a threaded plug in its place with the cord removed, at no cost.
