P0731 means the transmission control module (TCM) found first gear running outside its allowed ratio on this 9-speed Jeep Cherokee. Start with fluid level and condition, then make sure the TCM software is current. If the code comes back, the valve body and clutch C are next. Shifting can change once the fault is stored, so stop driving if it drops into neutral or you lose drive.

Safety first

  • With the transaxle out, the center of gravity shifts rearward; put safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the axle.
  • Wear safety glasses inside the transmission; springs and snap rings can fly out.
  • Apply the parking brake for the confirmation drive.
  • Isolate the negative battery cable before valve body work.

What does P0731 mean on a 2014-2018 Cherokee?

P0731 (Gear 1 Shift Incorrect Ratio) is a TCM code on the 948TE. The TCM compares input shaft speed against output shaft speed and checks the actual ratio against a minimum and a maximum calibrated ratio for the gear. It runs that check in a fixed gear, while a gear engages and during shifts. First gear is 4.70:1.

The TCM runs the monitor only when all of these hold:

  • The selector is in Drive or Reverse.
  • Fluid temperature is above a calibrated threshold.
  • No clutch slip control function is commanded.
  • Input speed is above a calibrated threshold and its signal has no failure.
  • A valid output speed signal exists, from the output speed sensor or calculated from wheel speed if the sensor signal is not available.
  • A valid engine speed signal comes from the PCM.
  • During shifts only, output speed and its gradient are both above calibrated thresholds.

The TCM logs a symptom in these cases:

  • During a shift, when the measured ratio falls outside the allowed range.
  • In a fixed gear with output speed above a threshold, when the ratio stays outside the range for a calibrated time.
  • In a fixed gear with output speed below that threshold, when the difference between (output speed times the fixed ratio of the actual gear) and input speed exceeds a threshold for a calibrated time.

If the symptom shows up on an upshift, or on a downshift that needs a dog clutch, the TCM aborts the shift and returns to the gear it started from. On a dog clutch downshift, a fault code naming that dog clutch is stored as well.

In a fixed gear, the TCM answers a symptom by commanding an upshift. After a calibrated number of symptoms it stores the failure and engages a calibrated gear. That gear is monitored too; if it fails, the TCM picks another in a calibrated order meant to steer around the damaged clutch. A further symptom in the last alternative gear stores a general transmission ratio malfunction. Every limit here is a calibrated value inside the TCM.

Read the rest of the gear ratio family too: P0729 (gear 6), P0732 (gear 2), P0733 (gear 3), P0734 (gear 4), P0735 (gear 5), P076F (gear 7), P07D9 (gear 8) and P07F6 (gear 9). P0732 and P0733 run the same monitoring as P0731.

What symptoms does P0731 cause on the Cherokee?

You may notice any of these:

  • A warning light, sometimes with a transmission message.
  • Late or harsh engagement from a stop.
  • Engine revs rising without matching road speed.
  • The transmission limiting itself to certain gears or holding one gear.

What causes P0731 on the Cherokee, most likely first?

Here is how the usual suspects rank, most likely first.

RankCauseQuick confirmTypical fix
1Fluid level low or fluid in poor conditionCheck for leaks and condition; read the level at the check port with the fluid above 50 C (122 F), idling in Park on level groundRepair the leak, set the level with the specified fluid
2TCM software not currentRead the software version; look for an applicable bulletin or open recall by VINReflash the TCM (and the PCM where the bulletin says), then relearn (required)
3Valve body (sticking valve or solenoids)Code returns after fluid and software are right; inspect the valve body solenoids and valves tied to first gearRepair or replace the valve body; valve body solenoid learn and adaptation (required)
4Clutch CCode returns and the first gear clutches inspect poorly with the transmission openedRepair or replace the transmission per the service information; relearn (required)
5Speed signal, wiring or connector faultCheck the input and output speed sensors; inspect wiring and connectors and wiggle the wires for shorts and opensRepair the wiring or connector as found
6TCMOther causes ruled outReplace and program the TCM; valve body solenoid learn and adaptation (required)

The maker issued recall 19V-447 for a stuck valve body valve on the 2014 3.2L, fixed with a TCM software flash, which is the same family of fault as causes 2 and 3. Service bulletin 21-008-15 covers a C-clutch snap ring on 2014-2015 Cherokees on a dealer VIN list, which ties to cause 4.

How do you diagnose P0731 on a 2014-2018 Cherokee?

You will need a scan tool that reads engine and transmission codes and data, the wiring schematics for the transmission circuits, and basic hand tools.

  1. 1

Start with the basics before any test.

Use a fully charged battery. Then deal with these codes first, by family:

    • Engine family: every engine code that is present gets read and repaired before any transmission symptom diagnosis.
    • Transmission family: any other TCM codes, in particular variant codes, get their own tests first.

Read and record the TCM codes and the TCM software version. Confirm the software is current, since various problems are fixed by a flash, and record the stored environmental data before you flash because a flash erases it. Inspect the wiring and connectors at the transmission components, confirm the axle ratio and transfer case ratio, check for leaks and fluid condition, and set the fluid level. For the level, idle the engine in Park on level ground with fluid above 50 C (122 F) on the scan tool, and read the level at the check port on top of the housing against the temperature chart. Depending on the vehicle, you reach it through the left front wheel well or after removing the engine cover. If any of this fixes the car, go to the confirmation drive.

  2. 2

Find out whether the code is current.

Read the TCM codes, record the environmental data, erase the codes, then drive under the conditions that set it, in Drive or Reverse with the fluid warm. Read the codes again. If P0731 returns, the fault is live; if it stays away, it is intermittent, so move to the wiring check.

  3. 3

If the code returns, confirm the fluid level again and confirm the input and output speed sensors operate properly. Then inspect the clutches, valve body solenoids and valves that apply in first gear. Clutch C, the valve body and the TCM are the parts this code points at. Repair or replace the transmission as the service information directs, then run the confirmation drive.

  4. 4

If the code does not return, the set conditions are not present now. Use the schematics to inspect the wiring and connectors for this circuit, wiggle the wires while watching for shorts and opens, and check for bulletins that apply to your VIN. Repair what you find and run the confirmation drive. If you find nothing, testing is complete.

The fluid level check, software check, valve body inspection and relearns above follow Jeep's own test order. Ask emanuals.ai about your Cherokee 9-speed and get the exact test steps, specs and procedures from the factory manual.

Ask about your Cherokee

Specs you need for the Cherokee P0731 repair

Transmission fluid typeMopar ZF 8&9 Speed ATF, Shell L12108, or equivalent; other fluids are not compatible and cause early failure, poor shift quality and possible leaks
Nominal refill capacity6.0 L (6.35 qt)
Valve body to case bolts, M6 x 628 Nm (71 in. lb)
Oil fill plug, M14 x 1.523 Nm (17 ft. lb)

What if the obvious fix does not work?

If the fluid level is right, the software is current and the speed sensors and wiring are sound, but P0731 keeps coming back, the problem is inside the transmission. The next suspects are the valve body (sticking valves or solenoids), then clutch C, and the TCM last, once everything else is ruled out. With the transmission open, inspect every clutch that applies in first gear, not just clutch C.

The common mistake is replacing a sensor or part on the code alone, before checking fluid condition, level and the stored data. What tends to work is correcting the level with the specified fluid, a software update followed by a relearn, replacing a valve body that is confirmed bad, and repairing wiring and connectors.

Your stop point is this: when the code returns with the fluid level right, the software current and the speed sensors and wiring sound, stop testing from outside and inspect the clutches, valve body solenoids and valves with the transmission opened.

How do you confirm the repair?

After any repair, reconnect anything you disconnected, erase the ABS, PCM and TCM codes, apply the parking brake, and warm the transmission above 43 C (110 F). If you repaired or replaced internal parts, check the fluid level and adjust it.

These relearns are required:

  • If you replaced the TCM, the valve body, or a transmission that came without a TCM, run a valve body solenoid learn with the scan tool.
  • If you did internal repairs or replaced the TCM, run a TCM adaptation.
  • A TCM flash zeroes the adaptation cells, so a flash needs the relearn too.
  • Skip the valve body solenoid learn on a car that only had its transmission assembly replaced, because it erases factory settings.

Then road test with fifteen to twenty upshifts so every gear gets used, from a standing start to 72 km/h (45 mph) with a steady throttle opening of 20 to 25 degrees. Below 40 km/h (25 mph), make five to eight wide open throttle kickdowns to first gear, with at least 5 seconds in second and in third between kickdowns. Read the codes afterward. If none set, you are done; if one sets, work that code.

Questions mechanics ask about P0731 on the Cherokee

Can you drive a Jeep Cherokee with P0731?+

Shifting can change on you, so treat it with caution. Once the TCM stores the failure it engages a calibrated gear and may move through alternative gears. The stuck valve recall on the 2014 3.2L describes a stuck valve in the valve body that keeps a clutch from releasing, which can shift the transmission to neutral and cause loss of drive. If it drops to neutral or you lose drive, stop driving.

What if P0731 does not come back after clearing it on the Cherokee?+

A code that does not return after you clear it and drive is treated as intermittent. Erase it, drive in Drive or Reverse with the fluid warm, and read the codes again. If it stays away, inspect the wiring and connectors for this circuit and check for bulletins that apply to your VIN.

What other codes set with P0731 on the Cherokee?+

A dog clutch fault code is stored if the symptom shows up during a dog clutch downshift, and repeated symptoms in the fallback gears store a general ratio malfunction. Other gear ratio codes such as P0732 and P0733 can be present too. Read them all and note which gear each one names.

Is there a recall or service bulletin for the 948TE in the Cherokee?+

Yes, several cover this 9-speed. Recall 19V-447 covers a stuck valve body valve on the 2014 3.2L and is fixed with a free TCM flash. Recall 16V-529 covers harness crimps on 2014-2015 Cherokees that can drop the transmission into neutral, fixed with PCM and TCM reprogramming at no charge. Service bulletin 21-008-15 covers a C-clutch snap ring on 2014-2015 vehicles on a dealer VIN list. Eligibility is confirmed by VIN.

Does a software update help with P0731 on the Cherokee?+

Various problems on this transmission are fixed by TCM software, so confirm it is current before you test. The maker issued service bulletin 21-016-16, a flash for transmission diagnostic and shift enhancements on 2014 Cherokees with the 948TE. A flash erases the stored environmental data, so record it first, and it zeroes the adaptation cells, so a relearn is required afterward. Service bulletin 21-013-16 covers the Quick Learn procedure on 2015-2016 Cherokees after a valve body or TCM replacement.
