P0AA6 and P31E7 on a 2018-2021 Nissan Leaf: Won't Restart? Find the Leak to Ground First

P0AA6 on a 2018-2021 Nissan Leaf means the control module read high voltage insulation resistance at 250 kilohms or less, a leak to ground, and P31E7 follows to block restart. The cause is the compressor, PTC heater, inverter and motor, PDM or battery pack, depending on when it sets. Confirm it by running five operating states with a scan tool. A car that is shut off may not restart, so find the leak first.
Safety first
- Disconnect high voltage: power off, 12 V negative off, service plug out and in your pocket, wait about 10 minutes, confirm 5 V or less.
- Wear insulating gloves, shoes, face shield and glasses, and tape removed terminals.
- Set the insulation tester to 500 V only, never on the 12 V system.
- Use only new EV compressor oil, no leak dye.
What does P0AA6 mean on a 2018-2021 Leaf?
P0AA6 (HV battery voltage system isolation, sub-code 1A) is a low insulation resistance fault: current leaking between the high voltage side and vehicle ground. The Li-ion battery controller sends the pack's insulation sensing signal to the control module (VCM), which watches the high voltage circuit from it.
The VCM sets P0AA6 when the reading is 250 kilohms or less in any of five operating states:
- READY, shift in P, A/C off, for at least 50 seconds.
- READY, shift in P, A/C full cold, for at least 30 minutes.
- READY, shift in P, A/C full hot, for at least 30 minutes.
- Shift in D, faster than 10 mph (15 km/h), for at least 40 seconds.
- Power off, quick charge connector connected, quick charging for at least 20 seconds.
With the power switch on, once the VCM has detected P0AA6 it sets P31E7 (restart inhibition). P31E7 has no signal, threshold or delay of its own.
Each state points at a part: A/C cold at the compressor, A/C hot at the PTC heater, driving at the inverter and motor, quick charging at the PDM. Idle with the A/C off points at no single part, so you work through the harness and components by elimination. A leak between the quick charge relay and port, or between the normal charge port and the PDM, does not set P0AA6.
Both codes are one trip (power switch off, then on). The VCM requests the EV system warning lamp through the combination meter over CAN. P0AA6 blocks quick charging, normal charging and another READY start; P31E7 blocks another READY start.
Three sibling codes set from the battery controller and only light the lamp: P33DF (isolation sensor signal voltage too high, delay 20 seconds or less), P33E0 (too low, delay 20 seconds or less) and P33E1 (no amplitude variation in the signal voltage). The pack inspection below applies to P33E1 as well.
What symptoms does P0AA6 cause on the Leaf?
- EV system warning lamp on.
- Quick charging will not run.
- Normal charging will not start.
- The car cannot be put into READY again after power off ("Service EV System").
What causes P0AA6 on the Leaf, most likely first?
This is a working order by part, because the fault follows whichever part is leaking.
| Rank | Cause | Quick confirm | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Electric A/C compressor | Code returns with A/C full cold; compressor insulation check fails | Replace compressor with new EV oil; if other gas may be mixed in, change refrigerant and oil instead |
| 2 | Li-ion pack (module, bus bar, junction box, fuse, service plug switch or battery controller; on the 62 kWh pack, a module with a bent retention plate) | Other parts pass or the idle path leads here; pack insulation inspection | Replace every failing part found; battery controller if none; module with the bent plate |
| 3 | PTC heater | Code returns with A/C full hot; heater insulation check fails | Replace the PTC heater |
| 4 | PDM (power delivery module) | Code returns during quick charging; PDM insulation check fails | Replace the PDM |
| 5 | Traction motor inverter or motor | Code returns while driving; inverter and motor insulation checks | Replace the one that fails; write the resolver offset |
| 6 | High voltage harness, connectors or a visibly damaged part | Visual check; harness side test at the pack connector | Repair or replace the damaged part; harness between PDM and pack if all components pass |
Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB23-024A covers the pack row on a 62 kWh Leaf that will not start with both codes stored and a module whose retention plate is bent.
How do you diagnose P0AA6 on a 2018-2021 Leaf?
You will need a scan tool with EV self-diagnostics, an insulation tester, a voltmeter rated for high voltage work and insulating gloves.
- 1
Look over every high voltage part with the power off.
Repair or replace anything damaged.
- 2
Find the state that sets the code.
Before each run, power off and wait at least 90 seconds without opening or closing a door (if you handle one, wait another 90 seconds), and make sure the 12 V battery is at 11 V or more. Run the five states in order, checking the self-diagnostic result after each, and stop at the first where P0AA6 returns.
- 3
Follow that state's branch, after disconnecting high voltage and confirming the voltage.
- A/C cold: check compressor insulation. If it passes, the inspection ends. If it fails and only EV refrigerant has been used, replace the compressor. If other gas may have been mixed in, change refrigerant and compressor oil instead, since other gas can lower insulation.
- A/C hot: check the PTC heater. If it passes, the inspection ends; if it fails, replace it.
- Driving: check the inverter and the motor, and replace whichever fails its own insulation check.
- Quick charging: check the PDM. If it passes, the inspection ends; if it fails, replace it. The PDM procedure also covers the harness to the pack.
- Idle, A/C off: disconnect the pack's high voltage connector and test the harness side to ground. If it passes, check the PTC heater (replace if it fails), then go on to the pack. If it fails, check the compressor (with the refrigerant question above), then the PDM, motor and inverter, and replace the first that fails. If all four pass, replace the harness between the PDM and the pack.
- 4
Inspect the pack.
First record the maximum cell voltage from the HV BATTERY data monitor, needed if a module is replaced. Then disconnect high voltage, confirm the voltage, and remove the Li-ion battery, upper case and battery controller. Work through the bus bars, high voltage and PTC connectors, junction box, high voltage fuse, service plug switch, then module insulation. Finish the whole procedure and write down every failing part, because insulation can be lost in more than one place. Replace everything you wrote down; if none, replace the battery controller.
- 5
On the 62 kWh pack, when the car will not start with both codes stored, use the pack diagnosis to find the module that caused them; it is only ever in row A or B. Pull it and look at the retention plate. Replace the module only if the plate is bent. If the plate is normal, that bulletin does not apply and the pack path above continues.
Get the P0AA6 insulation tests for your Leaf
The five-state test and the compressor, PTC heater, PDM, motor and pack checks above follow Nissan's own test order. Ask emanuals.ai about your Leaf and get the exact test steps, specs and post-repair procedures from the factory manual.
Specs you need for the Leaf P0AA6 repair
| Electric compressor oil type | ND-OIL11 or equivalent (EV compressor oil) |
|---|---|
| Electric compressor oil amount, with heat pump | 140 mL (4.7 US fl oz) |
| Electric compressor oil amount, without heat pump | 150 mL (5.1 US fl oz) |
| Refrigerant | EV-specific refrigerant only |
What if the obvious fix does not work?
Revisit the refrigerant history. Other gas mixed into the system can lower insulation, and a new compressor will not cure that, so change the refrigerant and oil.
After the code is cleared the car can run again for a while and then throw the fault again, so a cleared code does not mean the cause is gone. Check the 12 V battery too; the confirmation runs need it at 11 V or more.
Your stop point is the idle branch. If the harness side fails and the compressor, PDM, motor and inverter all pass, replace the harness between the PDM and the pack. If the pack inspection turns up nothing, replace the battery controller.
How do you confirm the repair?
After any repair, reconnect everything, power on and erase the DTC. This is required. These are required when they apply:
- After installing a compressor, use only new EV compressor oil (never recovered oil), replace the O-rings, run it in READY with A/C on for at least 1 minute with the car parked, and check its electrical bonding to the body.
- After replacing the motor or inverter, write the traction motor resolver offset with the scan tool. After an inverter swap the warning lamp comes on and P325C-00 sets until this is done; check the lamp is off and erase P325C-00.
- After replacing the Li-ion battery or battery controller, run the gradual capacity loss data clear (never on a part that was not replaced with a new one) and load the battery identification data, otherwise P3102 sets.
- After replacing the junction box, run the junction box data clear.
Then repeat the five states, each starting from power off, a 90 second wait and a 12 V battery at 11 V or more: READY in P with A/C off for 50 seconds or more; A/C full cold for 30 minutes or more; A/C full hot for 30 minutes or more; drive in D above 10 mph for 40 seconds or more at a safe speed; power off and quick charge for 20 seconds or more. If P0AA6 does not return in any of the five, you are done.
If other codes are stored, work them one at a time in priority order. P0AA6 is in group 2 and P31E7 in group 3, so group 1 comes first:

Questions mechanics ask about P0AA6 on the Leaf
Can you drive a Leaf with P0AA6 and P31E7?+–
The fail-safe blocks quick charging, normal charging and another READY start. A Leaf that is shut off may not start again until the fault is found and the code is erased. Treat it as a stop-and-find-it code.
Will P0AA6 clear itself on the Leaf?+–
The repair ends with erasing the DTC and re-running the five-state confirmation. Clearing the code can let the car run again, with the fault returning later if the leak is still there.
What else sets with P0AA6 on the Leaf?+–
P31E7 (restart inhibition). The VCM sets it whenever it detects P0AA6, and the P0AA6 diagnosis is the path for both. Nissan has also issued a Technical Service Bulletin that names the two together for the 62 kWh pack.
Does a Nissan record cover P0AA6 on the Leaf?+–
Technical Service Bulletin NTB23-024A covers a Leaf with the 62 kWh pack that will not start with P31E7 and P0AA6 stored. Find the module in row A or B and replace it only if its retention plate is bent. Voluntary Service Campaign P9351 replaces the PDM on eligible 2019 Leafs at no charge to the customer for parts or labor; a dealer can check a VIN for eligibility.
Why does the A/C refrigerant matter on a Leaf with P0AA6?+–
Gas other than the EV-specific refrigerant can lower insulation resistance. If it may have been mixed in, the fix is to change the refrigerant and compressor oil instead of replacing the compressor, which is why the compressor branch asks about service history first.
