P17F0 and P17F1 are CVT judder codes on the 2014-2015 Nissan Rogue 2.5L. P17F0 points at the belt and pulleys; P17F1 points at the control valve assembly. Scan for higher-priority transmission codes first, then confirm the car really judders. On P17F1, the belt inspection decides the repair. Neither code changes how the car drives, and the work is called for when the judder complaint is real.

Safety first

  • Selector in Neutral and driver door unlatched before lifting for the belt check; turn the tire forward only, since backward can pull the lens between belt and pulley.
  • Safety glasses, rubber gloves and ventilation when spraying cooler cleaner.
  • Keep dirt out while the valve is off; use only NS-3 CVT fluid.
  • Do the confirmation drive at a safe speed.

What does P17F0 and P17F1 mean on a 2014-2015 Rogue?

P17F0 is CVT Judder (T/M Inspection). It refers to the belt and pulleys, the steel belt and the two pulleys that make up the variator inside the transaxle. There is no sensor or circuit behind it.

P17F1 is CVT Judder (C/V Inspection). It refers to CVT hydraulic pressure variation, and the control valve assembly is the listed cause. That valve bolts to the transaxle case under the oil pan and carries the primary and secondary pressure sensors, the fluid temperature sensor and the solenoid valves.

The diagnosis applies when the owner reports judder (shake, shudder, single or multiple bumps or vibration), hesitation on acceleration, lack of power or RPM flare. A code stored with none of those complaints does not call for this repair. The fail-safe response for both codes is none, so driving is not changed.

Nissan also released a TCM software update that adds diagnostic logic watching CVT conditions and storing these two codes. It applies only when the car's TCM part number matches the bulletin's table. To get the codes to set, accelerate slowly from a stop to 40 mph on 0 to 10 percent throttle, easing the throttle gently before torque converter lock-up, which comes around 20 to 35 mph. A slight grade can help. The logic needs three events before a code stores.

The TCM lists one trip and no warning lamp for these codes, so they can store with the light off. P17F2, CVT Judder (T/C Inspection), is the sibling code for the torque converter. It has its own procedure and is not part of this guide.

What symptoms does P17F0 and P17F1 cause on the Rogue?

  • Judder, shake or shudder, including single or multiple bumps or vibration
  • Hesitation on acceleration
  • Lack of power
  • RPM flare, with the engine revving and the car slow to respond

What causes P17F0 and P17F1 on the Rogue, most likely first?

Most likely first, here is what I would check.

Nissan's technical service bulletin NTB16-110 covers this belt-or-valve repair path for the 4-cylinder Rogue, along with the related codes P0776, P2813, P1715 and P0841.

How do you diagnose P17F0 and P17F1 on a 2014-2015 Rogue?

You will need a scan tool, and for the P17F1 belt check a borescope with a mirror attachment.

  1. 1

Scan the TCM for every stored code and work them in priority order.

Network codes come first, then torque converter and solenoid circuit codes, then TCM, range switch, temperature, speed and pressure sensor codes. P17F0, P17F1 and P17F2 sit in the last group, so they are the last thing you chase. If P17F1 and P17F0 are both stored, diagnose P17F0 first. The same goes when P2813, P0776, P0965 or P0841 shows up with P17F0.

  2. 2

    Confirm the complaint.

The car should actually judder, hesitate, lack power or flare RPM. A judder code with none of that does not call for this repair.

  3. 3

If P17F0 is stored and nothing higher in the priority order is left, the repair is to replace the CVT sub-assembly (belt and pulleys) and install a new control valve. There is no belt inspection on this path. It is a transaxle-out job that needs special tools.

  4. 4

If P17F1 is stored and P17F0 is not, remove the control valve and inspect the belt.

    • Strap the right front tire so the belt can turn, and mark the left front tire so you cover all 360 degrees.
    • Insert the lens about 7 inches between the case and the pulley, then turn the left front tire forward one full turn.
    • Check the passenger side of the belt first, then the driver side, looking only at the sides that touch the pulleys.
    • A good belt shows consistent parallel lines across the contact surfaces. Scuffing, smeared or missing lines, or damage means the belt is bad.
    • If the belt is OK, install a new control valve. If it is not, replace the sub-assembly and install a new control valve, same as P17F0.
  5. 5

Whenever a control valve goes in, on either path, these services are required. Flush the CVT fluid cooler and lines. Use a new lip seal, oil pan gasket and drain plug gasket, and never reuse the old ones. If the car has the old-style oil strainer and temperature sensor bracket, replace them with the new style. Fit the new QR code sticker supplied with the valve on the range switch. Refill with NS-3 CVT fluid and set the level with the fluid at 35 to 45 degrees C (95 to 113 degrees F), aiming for about 40 degrees C (104 degrees F).

  6. 6

Also required after the valve is replaced: print the current calibration data, then check that the serial number on the new valve, on its QR label and on the supplied CD all match. Write the new valve's calibration data to the TCM and print the new data. Run clutch point learning, then select learning, then erase the CVT fluid degradation data. Keep the CD until this is done. If the TCM part number matches the bulletin's table and a reprogram is needed, do it before these steps.

Oil strainer bolts7.9 N·m (70 in-lb)
Oil pan bolts7.9 N·m (70 in-lb)
Manual plate lock nut22.1 N·m (16 ft-lb)

For the sub-assembly plus control valve repair, use the total capacity, not the 4 L figure.

What if the obvious fix does not work?

A higher-priority network, solenoid or sensor code left unfixed will keep you chasing the wrong part, and P17F0 comes before P17F1 when both are stored. If the belt inspection failed on a P17F1 car, a valve alone is the wrong repair; the sub-assembly and a new valve go together.

Fluid is the other trap. Level and condition matter and NS-3 is the only fluid to use, but fluid service alone is not the repair for these codes. Reusing the lip seal or gaskets, or skipping the cooler flush, undercuts a valve job.

Your stop point is the confirmation drive. If the judder is still there and the code returns, go back to the start of the diagnosis: recheck for higher-priority codes and, on a P17F1 car, redo the belt inspection.

How do you confirm the repair?

After the repair, clear the codes. If a control valve went in, the calibration write, clutch point learning then select learning, and the fluid degradation erase are required before you call it done.

Then confirm with a drive:

  • Turn the ignition off and wait at least 10 seconds, then turn it on.
  • Take a test drive of 5 minutes or more at a safe speed.
  • Stop and check for codes.

If the judder is gone and the code does not return, the job is finished. If the judder comes back and the code returns, go back to the diagnosis.

Work these codes before P17F0 and P17F1, grouped by family (P0841 is the one exception; when it shows with P17F0, diagnose P17F0 first):

  • Network and communication: P0863 (control unit CAN), U0073 (bus A off), U0100 (ECM A), U0102 (transfer), U0140 and U0141 (BCM), U0155 (IPC), U0300 (CAN data), U1000 (CAN circuit), U110F (ECM), U1111 (chassis control module), U1117 (ABS)
  • Torque converter and solenoid circuits: P0740 and P0743 (torque converter), P0778 and P0779 (pressure control solenoid B), P0962 and P0963 (pressure control solenoid A), P0966 and P0967 (pressure control solenoid B), P2814 and P2815 (select solenoid)
  • TCM, range switch, temperature, speed and pressure sensors: P062F (EEPROM), P0705 and P0706 (range sensor), P0711, P0712 and P0713 (fluid temperature sensor), P0715 and P0717 (input speed sensor A), P0841 (fluid pressure sensor A), P0847 and P0848 (fluid pressure sensor B), P084C and P084D (fluid pressure sensor H), P0890 (TCM), P2765 (input speed sensor B)

P0744, P0746, P0776, P0965, P17F2 and P2813 sit in the same last group as P17F0 and P17F1.

Questions mechanics ask about P17F0 and P17F1 on the Rogue

Can I drive a Rogue with P17F0 or P17F1 stored?+

Neither code changes how the car drives, and neither has a warning lamp. The diagnosis is called for when the car judders, hesitates, loses power or flares RPM. Do the confirmation drive at a safe speed.

What else sets with P17F0 on the Rogue?+

P17F1 can store with it, and P17F0 gets diagnosed first. Nissan's bulletin for the 4-cylinder Rogue groups both with P0776, P2813, P1715 and P0841, and the procedures for P2813, P0776, P0965 and P0841 also send you to P17F0 first.

Is there a Nissan bulletin on P17F0 and P17F1?+

Yes. NTB15-083 is the TCM update that adds the logic that stores these codes. NTB15-084 and NTB16-110 cover the repair path, and the second one splits it into a new valve alone or the sub-assembly plus a new valve, based on the belt inspection.

Does changing the control valve on a Rogue need anything else?+

Yes, and these are required. Flush the cooler, write the new valve's calibration data to the TCM, run clutch point learning then select learning, and erase the CVT fluid degradation data. Use new seals and gaskets, and refill with NS-3.

Does Nissan's CVT warranty extension cover P17F0 on the Rogue?+

The extension is closed for the 2014-2015 Rogue. It raised the CVT warranty from 60 months or 60,000 miles to 84 months or 84,000 miles, whichever came first, on 2014-2018 Rogues. It covered the CVT assembly, internal CVT components, gaskets and seals, the control valve body, the torque converter, the cooler kit if applicable, and TCM reprogramming for CVT concerns. That window has run out for these model years.
