P219A and P219B on a 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey (3.5L J35Y7) mean one cylinder is burning a different air-fuel mix than its neighbors on the rear bank (P219A) or the front bank (P219B). Worn or clogged fuel injectors are the most likely cause. The fastest confirm is to swap the problem cylinder's injector with another and rerun the cylinder air-fuel test. A guide cannot set a safe driving limit for your van, so get it diagnosed.

Safety first

  • Fuel is flammable, so keep fire away, and relieve fuel pressure before you disconnect any fuel line.
  • Replace injectors in sets; mixing old and new can cause poor engine performance and fuel leaks.
  • After a compression test, reset the PCM, or it keeps the injectors from operating.
  • Adjust valves only with ECT sensor 1 below 100 degrees F (38 degrees C).

What does P219A and P219B mean on a 2018-2019 Odyssey?

P219A (Air-Fuel Ratio Variation of Cylinder, Bank 1, Rear Bank) and P219B (Bank 2, Front Bank) are the same check on opposite banks. Bank 1 is the rear bank (cylinders 1 to 3) and bank 2 is the front bank (cylinders 4 to 6). The PCM watches the rear A/F sensor (bank 1, sensor 1) for P219A and the front A/F sensor (bank 2, sensor 1) for P219B.

Every cylinder on a bank feeds that one sensor in turn, so a cylinder running richer or leaner makes the signal swing in step with the firing cycle (two engine revolutions). The PCM also varies the air-fuel ratio on purpose, separates the two swings, and stores the code when the cylinder swing is large enough against its own variation.

The PCM sets the code when the integrated A/F sensor output variation value is 5 or more within 11.5 seconds. All of these must hold:

  • The monitor runs once per driving cycle and takes 7.5 to 11.5 seconds.
  • Engine coolant temperature (ECT sensor 1) is 156 degrees F (69 degrees C) or higher.
  • Engine speed is 3,200 rpm or lower.
  • Intake air amount at 1,500 rpm is between 0.25 g (0.009 oz) and 0.58 g (0.02 oz).
  • Intake air amount at 2,400 rpm is between 0.25 g (0.009 oz) and 0.6 g (0.021 oz).

The first detection stores a pending code. If the fault returns on the next drive cycle, the MIL comes on and the PCM stores the confirmed code, freeze data and an on-board snapshot.

That makes it a two drive cycle code. The MIL goes out if the fault does not return in three consecutive drive cycles with similar engine conditions. A scan tool or disconnecting the 12 volt battery also clears the codes, freeze data and snapshot.

Two sibling codes watch the same rear sensor. P0130 (out of range) runs continuously and sets at 4.66 V or more for 7.0 seconds or longer. P0133 (slow response) runs once per driving cycle, with a limit that depends on engine speed and load.

What symptoms does P219A and P219B cause on the Odyssey?

  • Check engine light on
  • Misfire codes stored with it
  • A catalyst efficiency code (P0420 or P0430) stored with it

Honda issued Service Bulletin 21-010, a warranty extension covering injector replacement for P219A and P219B on 2018-2019 Odysseys, which lines up with cause number 1.

How do you diagnose P219A and P219B on a 2018-2019 Odyssey?

You will need a scan tool, a compression gauge, feeler gauges, a torque wrench, throttle plate cleaner and basic hand tools.

  1. 1

    Read every stored code first.

If any of these is stored with P219A or P219B, fix it first, then recheck.

    • A/F sensor (sensor 1): P0130, P0133, P0150, P0153, P2237, P2238, P2240, P2241, P2243, P2245, P2247, P2249, P2251, P2252, P2254, P2255, P2A00, P2A03
    • A/F sensor (sensor 1) heater: P0134, P0135, P0154, P0155
    • Injectors (cylinders 1 to 6): P0201 to P0206
    • Misfire: P0300 (random), P0301 to P0306
    • Ignition coil power circuit (cylinders 1 to 6): P0351 to P0356
  2. 2

Confirm the fault with the Cylinder A/F Test, which Honda runs from its factory scan tool.

Warm the engine by holding 3,000 rpm in P or N with no load until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle. With the A/C and all electrical loads off, run the test three times.

    • If it comes back not OK, you have the fault; move on to the compression test.
    • If it comes back OK, test drive within the conditions recorded in the on-board snapshot (vehicle speed, engine speed, MAP sensor, ECT sensor 1, accelerator pedal position, short term fuel trim bank 1 and bank 2) and watch the OBD status for both codes. FAILED means the fault is duplicated, so move on. PASSED means an intermittent fault and the system is OK at this time; try to reproduce it under the snapshot conditions. EXECUTING means keep driving until a result shows. OUT OF CONDITION means recheck the drive conditions and repeat.
  3. 3

Run a compression test with the ignition off.

If one cylinder reads lower than the others, repair the compression problem; if all are alike, go on. The test stops all injectors with the scan tool, has you remove the coils and plugs, and cranks the engine with the throttle fully open. Afterward, resetting the PCM with the scan tool to cancel the injector stop is required, or the PCM keeps the injectors from operating.

  4. 4

    Check valve clearance cold.

If it is out of specification, adjust it, and only with ECT sensor 1 below 100 degrees F (38 degrees C).

  5. 5

Look for carbon or sludge in the EGR line.

If it is there, clean the intake manifold EGR port, the EGR pipe and the passage inside the EGR valve with throttle plate cleaner. Then look for carbon build-up in the intake and exhaust manifold; if you find it, check for oil leaks, repair what is needed and remove the carbon.

  6. 6

Swap the injector from the problem cylinder with one from another cylinder, warm the engine the same way and run the Cylinder A/F Test three times with A/C and loads off.

If the failure follows the injector, replace all injectors as a set. If it does not, treat it as an intermittent fault and check the engine for oil leaks.

On a 2018-2019 van that qualifies by VIN, Honda's own path skips the testing and goes straight to new fuel injectors, with at least 5,000 miles on the odometer. A dealer confirms eligibility by VIN. Any van that does not qualify gets the steps above.

That job means relieving fuel pressure, disconnecting the 12 volt battery negative terminal, and removing the intake manifold, high pressure pump cover, fuel rail cover and fuel joint pipe. Never reuse the old fuel joint pipe. With P0420 or P0430 stored alongside P219A or P219B, the bulletin also calls for new injectors, and one version updates the PGM-FI software first.

A crowfoot-type tool changes the torque reading, so recalculate the wrench setting if you use one.

What if the obvious fix does not work?

Start with the mistakes that undo an injector job: replacing fewer than all the injectors, reusing the old fuel joint pipe, and skipping the PCM reset after a compression test. Also make sure no code from the first diagnosis step is still stored.

If the swap check does not follow the injector, you have already been through valve clearance, compression, the EGR line and the manifold carbon. Check the engine for oil leaks. Stop when the swap check stays clean and the engine has no oil leak. That is an intermittent fault, so try to reproduce it under the conditions recorded in the snapshot. On a van that qualifies by VIN, Honda's bulletin still calls for new injectors for these codes without the swap test, so a clean swap does not change that.

How do you confirm the repair?

Clear the codes, then warm the engine as before. Drive in 4th gear at a steady 1,000 to 1,200 rpm, then take 10 to 15 seconds to accelerate up to 3,200 rpm. If the monitor has not finished, repeat the pattern, five times in total, and only where traffic rules and conditions allow. Then read the OBD status for P219A and P219B (PASSED is what you want) or run the Cylinder A/F Test three times with A/C and loads off (OK is what you want).

If you replaced injectors, check for fuel leaks and run an all-DTC check, clearing codes from all systems. That is required, and so is the PCM reset after a compression test. Make sure none of the first-step codes have returned. On a 9-speed (Q5NZ) van that got the software update version of the repair, also confirm the transmission software is current.

Questions mechanics ask about P219A and P219B on the Odyssey

What is the difference between P219A and P219B on the Odyssey?+

They are the same check on opposite banks. P219A is bank 1, the rear bank (cylinders 1 to 3), and P219B is bank 2, the front bank (cylinders 4 to 6).

Will P219A or P219B clear itself on an Odyssey?+

The MIL goes out if the fault does not return in three consecutive drive cycles with similar engine conditions. A scan tool or disconnecting the 12 volt battery also clears the codes. Clearing them does not repair the injector or engine fault behind them.

What else sets with P219A and P219B on the Odyssey?+

Honda's service bulletins pair these codes with P0420 and P0430 and the misfire codes P0300 to P0306. Repair any A/F sensor, A/F sensor heater, injector, misfire or ignition coil circuit code first, then recheck.

Does Honda's warranty extension cover P219A and P219B on the Odyssey?+

Honda extended injector coverage to 10 years from the original purchase date or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, on listed 2018-2019 Odysseys. Service Bulletin 20-100 covers the 2018 van and, with P0420 or P0430 stored, adds a PGM-FI software update ahead of the injectors. Eligibility is confirmed by VIN with a dealer, and the repair needs at least 5,000 miles on the odometer.

Does one bad injector mean replacing just one on the Odyssey?+

No. Once the swap check points at an injector, replace all injectors as a set. Honda's injector procedure sets the minimum at all three on the same bank, because mixed old and new injectors can cause poor performance and fuel leaks.
